Bulgaria is an attractive destination for foreign pensioners looking for a peaceful, affordable and well-connected place to live in Europe. The country offers low living costs, beautiful nature, access to the EU market, and a simple flat-tax environment.
Third-country nationals who are entitled to receive a pension under the legislation of Bulgaria, their country of origin, or another country may apply for prolonged residence in Bulgaria, provided they have sufficient means of support and meet the standard residence requirements.
Procedure for Bulgarian residence permit
The procedure usually starts with an application for a Visa D at the relevant Bulgarian embassy or consulate. After entering Bulgaria, the applicant applies for a prolonged residence permit before the Migration Directorate. The residence permit is generally issued for one year and may be renewed without limitation, as long as the legal requirements continue to be met.
Applicants must usually provide proof of pension entitlement, evidence of sufficient funds, accommodation, medical insurance, a valid passport, and a clean criminal record certificate for the initial application.
