Digital nomad residence permit

Bulgaria has introduced a new residence route for digital nomads, creating a strong opportunity for remote professionals, freelancers, business owners and international consultants from third countries.

This procedure is designed for individuals who work remotely and receive their income from outside Bulgaria. Eligible applicants may include remote employees of companies registered outside the EU, EEA and Switzerland; owners or shareholders holding more than 25% of a foreign company; and freelancers who have provided remote services to foreign clients for at least one year before applying.

Working as digital nomad

A key requirement is that digital nomads must not work for or provide services to Bulgarian legal entities or individuals. Applicants must also demonstrate sufficient income. The indicative income requirement is approximately EUR 31,000 per year, based on 50 minimum monthly wages for the previous calendar year.

The residence permit is generally issued for one year, with the possibility of one extension for another year. Bulgaria also offers major lifestyle and tax advantages, including a competitive cost of living and a flat 10% personal income tax rate for those who become Bulgarian tax residents.
